How to Prolong the Life of Your Roof

Your roof is one of the most important components of your home and also one of the most expensive ones to replace. However, no matter where you live, you can take steps to help your roofing last longer. It will take some extra work on your part, but it will be well worth the effort. Here are some tips for prolonging the life of your roof.

1. Remove Gunk from Your Gutters

Your roof gutters are designed to direct rainwater away from your roof. However, if they are filled with leaves, twigs and other items, they can't do their job properly. That is why you should plan to clean out your gutters once in the fall and once in the spring.

2. Inspect Your Roof for Missing Shingles

It is a good idea to walk around your house periodically and look for shingles on the ground. If your roof is missing shingles, it has a higher chance of experiencing leaks. If you notice missing shingles, you should have a roof professional replace them as soon as possible.

3. Trim Your Trees

If there are trees near your roof, remember to trim them regularly. Otherwise, the branches could fall on top of your roof during a storm and cause damage. Tree trimming isn't an easy job, so consider hiring a professional.

4. Don't Ignore Moss

Although moss can make your roof looking more interesting, it's not got for it. In fact, moss can cause your roof to retain moisture, which can eventually lead to rot. If you notice moss on your roof, remove it immediately with bleach and water.

5. Schedule Regular Roof Inspections

If your roof is fairly new and has not had any problems, you may not think it is necessary to have regular inspections. However, it is still beneficial to have a roofing professional check out your roof once a year. During this inspection, the roofing professional will check for leaks, broken shingles, sagging and other issues that you might have missed. If a problem is found, the roofing professional can repair it right away. The sooner an issue is detected, the easier and cheaper it is to fix.

Your roof is very important, so don't take it for granted. If you follow these helpful tips, you can keep your roof in great shape. If it has been a while since your last roof inspection, contact a residential roofing company today.
